How can research be funded in a way that rewards not only the number of publications but also research quality, technological development, collaboration with industry and tangible economic impact? Institutional funding, grants, basic and applied research, evaluation, intellectual property, revenue from commercialisation and collaboration with business. How can incentives be designed to ensure that universities are not reduced to serving as R&D facilities for companies, while simultaneously increasing the number of projects that progress from research to practical implementation?
